IPTV Not Working on Apple TV? How to Fix It
When a channel will not play in Revue, the cause is almost always one of three things: the playlist address, the stream format, or the network. Find what you see in the table below, then follow the checks in that step. Some address types cannot play in Revue at all: Xtream Codes and Stalker logins, and rtp:// and udp:// addresses. The full list is at the end of this guide.
Find your symptom
| What you see | Most likely cause | Where to look |
|---|---|---|
| “Couldn’t load the playlist” on the channel page | The playlist address | Step 1 |
| “Can’t play” with “unsupported URL” | An address type Revue doesn’t support | Step 2 |
| “Can’t play this channel” with “Unrecognized channel stream format (neither TS nor HLS)” | The address doesn’t lead to a video stream | Step 2 |
| A loading spinner that never stops | The network, or a stream Revue can’t read | Step 2, Step 3 |
| “Can’t play” with another message | See the message list | Error messages |
| Stuttering, freezing, or buffering | The network | Step 3 |
| Picture but no sound | The audio format or the audio output | No sound |
| Sound but no picture | The video format | Step 2 |
| A black screen for 1–2 seconds when you open or change a channel | Match Content is switching the TV mode. This is normal. | Short black screen |
| “Your Trial Has Ended” | The 7-day free trial is over | Trial |
| “Playback stopped” | You pressed Play/Pause, or the TV switched to another input | Press any button to resume |
| No program guide | Guide address or channel matching | Add your M3U playlist and EPG |
Step 1: Check the playlist address
If the channel page shows “Couldn’t load the playlist”, Revue could not read the playlist. The line under it gives the reason:
| Message | What to do |
|---|---|
| “Invalid playlist address” | Check the address in Settings › M3U Playlists (IPTV). It must start with http:// or https://. |
| “Fetching the playlist timed out” | The server did not respond within 15 seconds. Check that the server is up and that the Apple TV can reach it. |
| “Couldn’t fetch the playlist: …” | The server returned an error, or the network failed. The text after the colon comes from tvOS. This error also appears when the file is not UTF-8 text. |
| “The playlist is empty or its format is unsupported” | The file has no channel lines. Make sure the address leads to an M3U file, not a web page or a login page. The address of a single stream (.m3u8) is not a playlist. Put it into an M3U file as one channel. |
To test the address, open it in a browser on a computer on the same network as the Apple TV. You should see plain text that starts with #EXTM3U, followed by #EXTINF lines and stream addresses.
If a reload fails, Revue keeps the channel list it loaded before. Seeing a channel list on screen does not prove that the address still works. To reload, press Play/Pause on the channel list.
Step 2: Check the stream address and format
If the playlist loads but a channel doesn’t play, look at that channel’s address in the playlist file.
| Address | Plays in Revue |
|---|---|
http:// or https:// to an HLS stream (.m3u8) |
Yes |
http:// or https:// to an MPEG-TS stream, including multicast relayed by udpxy or rtp2httpd |
Yes |
rtsp:// with MPEG-TS inside (common for IPTV) |
Yes, as unicast over TCP |
rtsp:// from an IP camera |
No. Cameras send H.264 directly over RTP, not MPEG-TS. |
rtsp:// that asks for a user name and password |
No. Revue doesn’t support RTSP login. |
rtp:// or udp:// |
No. Relay the multicast to HTTP with udpxy or rtp2httpd first. |
rtmp:// or mmsh:// |
No |
| Xtream Codes or Stalker login | No. Use an M3U address instead. |
Then check the formats inside the stream:
- Video: H.264 and HEVC, up to 4K, including interlaced 1080i. Revue doesn’t decode MPEG-2 video. A channel with MPEG-2 video plays sound only.
- Audio: AAC, MP2, AC-3, and E-AC-3. Other audio formats, such as DTS, do not play, so the channel has no sound.
- Encrypted channels do not play.
To see what a stream contains, open its address in VLC on a computer on the same network, and look at its codec information. If VLC cannot play the address either, the problem is the source or the network, not the Apple TV.
Step 3: Check the network
Make sure the Apple TV can reach the server. A local address, such as http://192.168.1.1:4022/…, works only on the local network where that device is.
Check the bitrate. While a channel plays, press Right on the remote. A panel appears in the top-right corner. For MPEG-TS and RTSP channels, it shows the format: resolution and frame rate (such as 1080i@25), the bitrate (such as 9.6 Mbps), HDR for HLG channels, and the audio format for Dolby or multichannel audio (such as E-AC-3 5.1). If the bitrate stays at —, no data is arriving. If the bitrate is close to the speed of your connection, the picture will stutter. A 4K channel can use 20 Mbps or more, so connect the Apple TV with Ethernet if you can.
Automatic reconnection. When an MPEG-TS or RTSP stream stalls, Revue reconnects automatically up to two times. After that, it shows an error. Press Play/Pause to try again. HLS (.m3u8) channels do not reconnect on their own.
If you relay multicast with udpxy or rtp2httpd, connect the relay device to the IPTV network with an Ethernet cable. Multicast over Wi-Fi often loses packets. Also check the relay’s client limit: udpxy allows only 3 clients by default.
Error messages
These messages appear under “Can’t play”. The line at the bottom of the screen reads “Play/Pause to retry · Up/Down to change channels · Menu to go back”.
| Message | What it means |
|---|---|
| “unsupported URL” | Revue cannot open this type of address, for example rtp://, udp://, or rtmp://. See Step 2. |
| “Live source returned an error (HTTP …)” | The stream server refused the request. HTTP 403 often means the address has expired or is not allowed from your network. HTTP 404 means the channel is gone. |
| “Playback stalled” or “Video output stalled” | Data stopped arriving, or the picture stopped. Revue already tried to reconnect. Check the network and the source. |
| “Playback start timed out; the source is not responding” | An HLS channel did not start within 5 seconds. |
| “Playback has stalled for a while; the live stream may have ended” | An HLS channel made no progress for 25 seconds. |
| “No playable audio or video found in the stream” | The stream has no video or audio format that Revue supports. |
| “The provider hasn’t authorized this channel (channels are authorized individually)” | The RTSP server refused this channel. |
| “Channel no longer exists (404 at origin)” | The RTSP server does not have this channel. |
| “RTSP error (DESCRIBE failed (401))” | The RTSP server requires a login. Revue does not support RTSP login. |
Picture but no sound
- Check the audio format. Revue plays AAC, MP2, AC-3, and E-AC-3. A channel with only another audio format plays without sound.
- Check the audio track. If a channel has several audio tracks, Revue plays the first one it supports. You cannot switch tracks.
- Restart the channel after you change the audio output. Revue sets up audio for the current output when a channel starts. If you switch to AirPlay speakers, such as a HomePod, while a channel plays, change the channel or open it again.
A short black screen when you change channels
If Match Content is on in tvOS, the TV switches its frame rate and dynamic range to match each channel. During the switch, the screen goes black for 1–2 seconds. This is normal tvOS behavior. Between two channels with the same format, the TV does not switch again, and the last picture stays on screen until the new channel starts.
“Your Trial Has Ended”
Revue is free to download, with a 7-day free trial. After the trial, channels do not play until you buy Revue Pro, a one-time purchase: US$9.99 in the US, local pricing elsewhere. You can still browse your channels and change settings. The DLNA cast receiver stays free.
When you open a channel after the trial, Revue shows “Your Trial Has Ended”, a button to buy Revue Pro, and Restore Purchases. If you bought Revue Pro before, select Restore Purchases. If you see “Can’t Connect to the App Store”, the Apple TV cannot reach the App Store to check your purchase. Check the network and select Retry.
What Revue doesn’t support
